Working out how to grow a thicker beard can be quite a challenge for many men. There are a variety of reasons for this.
The problem that most men face is that once their beard reaches a certain length, the itchiness becomes unbearable and the end result is that they shave or trim a beard way too early.

So before I go through the reasons why some beards will grow thicker than others or the tips that you are after on how to make your beard thicker, we need to outline what the qualities of a great beard are.
Those qualities being:
Thickness – This is the number of hairs you have within your beard and how thick those hairs are.
Liveliness – Your beard will look full of life as long as you follow proper beard care and quite a lot of commitment to the regime.
Length – The length of your beard, this can and will vary man to man.
What I’ve found is that many men tend to struggle with the first of the beard qualities – thickness.
If you are looking for something to blame about the lack of thickness, then look no further than genetics. After all, genetics are responsible for how your hair will grow.
Some men are blessed with higher levels of testosterone and can develop a full and thick beard; I recall to this day the chap I went to school with who at fourteen years old had a full after 5 O’clock stubble by 9 am.
Some men are blessed… others are unfortunately left with little to no facial hair at all.
Hair will grow roughly an inch per month. This will mean that your beard will also grow at that rate, there are limiting factors which we’ll cover later, but that’s the typical growth rate you can expect unless you have a problem.
So thickness, let’s say that this is decided by around 85% on your genes. That means you have 15% left to play with via diet and other means and that 15% will mean a lot when it comes to helping your beard grow thicker.
We can do a lot with 15%, and this article will show you everything you can and should do to how to get a full beard.
What Makes Beard Thicker
Sometimes you look at other men and their beards appear to suddenly quick thicker and fuller within the space of a few weeks, while you’re watching your beard daily and seeing little change, it feels like it’s taking an eternity.
What you may have been missing is that you are getting somewhat of an illusion that someone’s beard is thicker, this illusion comes from 3 factors.
Beard color – The darker the beard, the thicker and fuller is looks.
Beard density – Thicker facial hair seems thicker and gives an impression that it’s growing faster than perhaps your own, although it’s not.
Diameter of hair strands – Some men are blessed with thicker hair follicles, and the result of that is thicker beard hairs.
Although genetics are significant in this, it’s not the only factor that determines how thick your beard will be.
Other factors will be your age and overall health and diet.
With age comes a beard! Teenagers are often disappointed as when they first grow a beard it tends to be a patchy beard.
The thing is that as you age, the thicker your beard will grow and some of those patches will start to fill in.
Very few men can grow a full and thick beard in the first years that they start to produce facial hair, even those with the good beard genes.
The most critical factor at this stage is patience. Your beard needs time to develop its density.
Throughout your twenties, your beard will continue to develop until it reaches its full potential.
By the time you hit your thirties, your beard should be fully developed and as thick as it will get with genetics along. If you are still not able to grow a beard in your thirties then perhaps a beard isn’t for you.. though you could look into beard transplants.
Please don’t get discouraged. Although you can’t affect how fast your beard grows, you can make it appear and grow thicker using my tips below.
So here are some simple tips that you can start implementing from today that will make your beard grow thicker in no time at all!
The Four Week Beard Rule
What is the four-week rule? Quite simply the four-week beard rule is a means to grow a thicker beard consistently, instead of miss of missing out on your full beard potential.
The sad truth is that the majority of men do a lot of things that impede the growth of their beards and they do this long before their beards have had the opportunity to read their full potential.
The top reason many men tend to limit their potential is that their beards begin to get itchy, this tends to happen around the two to three week mark and from that moment it gets itchier and itchier by the day until it’s consumed their every thought and the end result is the beard is shaved off, or it’s trimmed back to a level where it wasn’t itchy.
There are a few reasons why your beard gets itchy; it can be due to poor grooming habits. Mainly this is because the skin underneath the beard isn’t being moisturized sufficiently.
There’s also the fact that as new beard hairs grow, they cause a slight irritation in your facial skin, this does subside after a few days, but with the under-moisturized skin this just is the icing on the cake and most guys give up before getting through this stage.
I found it incredibly difficult to get through this stage myself the first time I grew a beard.
The trick to growing a thicker beard is to be able to get past that four-week mark.
Even if you see patches in your beard and that your beard will never in those gaps in, you need to be patient; time really is a strength when it comes to growing a beard.
After the four week mark, this is when your beard will start to connect us and fill in those patches, it’s at this point in your beard journey that you can evaluate what your beard will look like and how thick it will be.
So the bottom line is that when it comes to growing a thicker beard, you have to commit to the process, you have to get past the stubble phase to your beard to take shape, and it will then start to grow more rapidly.
If you start to trim or shape your beard too early, you stunt the growth process, and you’ll never attain that truly thick beard that you are looking for. Part of this is due to the fact that not all hair grows at an equal pace, you’ll find you have some fast growers and some slow growers and as times goes on the slow growers will make your facial hair thicker.
Steps Before Starting to Grow Your Beard
I’m going to let you in on a secret, a short cut you could say to avoid the itchiness that is associated with growing a beard for the first time.
When I first grew my beard, I suffered like many men beforehand, the end result… I shaved it off. The second time I grew my beard I came at it with a weapon to fight itchiness! With this weapon, I rocketed through the itchiest of days without a worry.
That secret weapon was beard oil.
It kept my beard and face moisturized, so I never got beard itch.
What you will want to do is wash your beard regularly, once or twice a week, even when you have stubble.
Don’t over wash it as that will make your beard itchier as the washing will dry your skin out.
Once washed, apply beard oil, apply it from day one. This will prevent that excessive itching and your beard will be softer and healthier.
During this initial growing phase, you may notice some patches or a lack of density in areas, when you notice this you have to commit to the first month of growth, it could well be that you’ve got some slow growers there so hold fast!

The Next Steps
If you’ve managed to survive the first month of beard growth without shaving, well, congratulations!
After you’ve made it through the four-week mark, you’ll have two main choices to make when it comes to growing a thicker beard.
The first option is to just simply let it grow on its own; this will allow your beard to reach its full potential. The other option is to start to begin to shape, sculpt and groom your beard.
Just letting it grow naturally will earn you many man points, but grooming will give you a more polished appearance.
So I highly advise grooming your beard so that you look sprucely when going to work, or on a date, or just looking good in general.
Some men can’t bare to wait the four weeks so will start grooming their beard from the start, but that introduces a risk that your beard growth will be stunted, and you won’t find your beards natural lines and as such it won’t look at good as it could.
If you do make mistakes and get your lines wrong, the upside is all you need to do is wait and let your beard regrow in those areas that you have trimmed or shaved by mistake.

A diet rich in the right vitamin and minerals will result in a super healthy beard and your overall health.
Adding more protein to your diet, if you didn’t know your hair is a protein filament, so the more protein-rich foods you consume, the healthier your beard will look.
Foods you should look to incorporate into your diet are eggs, nuts, leafy greens such as kale. These will supercharge your testosterone production and give you beard a luxurious and thicker appearance.

Trim Your Beard Properly
If you really want to groom your beard before the four-week mark, then I highly advise going to a professional barber who had experience in dealing with beards.
They’ll also be able to give you tips on how to get the best out of your beard and how to shape it to compliment your natural lines.
Once your beard reaches a certain point, typically around week five, you can start to trim it yourself; this will take patience and practice.
The first time you do this, it’ll take a very long time, little and often, we suggest using scissors to do the fine detail work. But for the overall length, you really need a reliable beard trimmer.
A good thing to remember is that you should firstly focus on defining your neckline and then shape your beard from that.
Now depending on how quickly your beard grows, will dictate how often you need to trim, this can be as frequent as once a week, to one to two times a month.
Avoid trimming a wet beard, so never do this after a shower. Your beard will be weighted down by the water in your beard so you can end up cutting off more than you intended to. But that’ll only show once your beard is entirely dry.

During your shower apply your beard shampoo and massage thoroughly throughout your beard. Leave the conditioner in for a couple of minutes to allow the nutrients to penetrate your beard.

Ignore The Myth That Shaving Makes Beard Grow Thicker and Faster
No doubt you’ve heard the age-old theory, or you’ve seen the question: Will shaving make beard thicker?
There is no truth to this theory; shaving will not make your beard thicker. Shaving just removes your beard down to the skin, think of a forest that’s been lumberjacked with all the tree stumps left behind, that’s what shaving does to your beard hair.
So realistically leaving your beard alone will result in a thicker beard.
When you shave your beard as it starts to grow again, it will appear thicker at the beginning; this is just an optical illusion.
The hairs nearest the root will be darker and coarser than the tips; this is why you feel like your beard is thicker after you shave it. Once the length of your beard increases, you will no longer notice this difference.
Quit Picking At It
A terrible habit that even I have is to pick at my beard. For me, this happens when I am deep in thought I start stroking my beard, and occasionally I’ll find an odd hair which gets a more direct stroke and before long that hair has been picked out.
Yes, it can be fun to play with, but hell hath no fury to your beard like a wandering hand.
The more time you spend fiddling with your beard, the more destruction that will occur, it’s like picking at a scab or acne, you end up plucking out occasional beard hairs, which will result in patchiness.
It is impossible to keep your hands off of your beard at all times, but try to limit the hand to beard actions.
Doing so will result in a thicker beard as you aren’t pulling out hairs at the root!
Brushes And Combs Are Your Friends
Your beard will grow in any which way it pleases, this means it will look and mess and if not managed it will look thin in some places and thick in others.
The only way to fix this is to use a beard brush and beard comb.
By brushing and combing your beard daily you can direct your beards growth, you’ll be able to control how the hairs lay on your face and neck, which will make your beard appear inherently fuller.
Another benefit of using a beard brush is that it will distribute your beard oils and conditioners more evenly.
How to Grow a Thicker Beard When Older
By the time you get to your thirties, you should have developer a full and thick beard. If you haven’t, then perhaps a beard isn’t in your genes. If you do still want to have a fuller and thicker beard, there are a few options you can choose from.
Before I go into each one, I will say that it’s best to love the beard you have rather than hunting for something that may not be achievable.
However, if you are still insisting of know how to make your beard thicker then your options are:
- Minoxidil (Rogaine)
- Beard implants
- Hormone therapy
All of these methods have their own pros and cons, so before taking the leap, it’s best to go into each one.
How Does Minoxidil (Rogaine) Work
I’ve had many men tell me how Minoxidil has worked wonders on their beards, how these chaps went from beardless to the thickest beard you can imagine. But then I’ve also had people claim the opposite, that Minoxidil has done nothing for them.
Clearly, Rogaine doesn’t work the same way for every man, but for those that it does work for, it works very well indeed.
Now Rogaine can’t grow hair where there are no hair follicles, so if you have a patch in your beard that’s bald with no sight of a follicle within a pore, then I’m sorry to tell you this but rogaine isn’t going to fill in that patch.
Your hair cells pass through some phases, 3 to be precise as they grow. Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen.
Anagen is the one that promotes hair growth, and this is the stage which Rogaine works on, it extends this stage to ensure the hair continues to grow.
There are some cons to using rogaine that you should be aware of, the biggest being, the second you stop using it, it’s effects will start to wear off, so if it works for you, you’ll need to constantly use it.
Unfortunately like with most drugs there are side effects, so men have experienced dry skin, redness, itching, and irritations. There have also been men who’ve experienced lower blood pressure.
There have also been cases where there has been some slight weight gain after taking Rogaine, though the evidence to support this is spotty.
Please consult your doctor before using it and keep an eye out for any side effects.
Do Beard Vitamins work
I’ve spoken above taking vitamins above, the short answer is yes, beard vitamins work, they aren’t a wonder drug, but they make sure that your body is holding the correct fuel for beard growth.
You can use a multi-vitamin, and that’ll cover most vitamins and minerals you need. However, a beard vitamin is specially formulated to give you exactly what you need and in the correct doses.
So if you really want to feed your beards growth, a beard vitamin is the preferred option over a multivitamin.
Do Beard Implants Work
Beard implants are often considered an extreme option to getting a thicker beard.
Beard implants lead to thicker beards, but the hairs that become your beard will come from your heard, The surgery takes several hours and is done under a local anesthesia.
Recovery isn’t the best, and you can be left with scars on your head.
The pros to implants are that when the hairs fall out, they will always regrow.
The cons are having to go through surgery, as well as the price as it isn’t a cheap option.
I wouldn’t advise going down this method, and if you do I would suggest trying all other natural methods before this option, though I would still say “embrace what your genes have provided you”.
Is Hormone Therapy Safe
There is another method that men can take to get a full beard, and that is hormone therapy. It can be taken in pill form, a hormonal cream or via hormonal injections.
People who’ve used hormone therapy have reported that their beards have become thicker afterward, though the percentage of success is lower than a beard implant.
Using hormones is risky, you are exposing yourself to many health risks, so while having a full beard is great. But please consider whether or not the risks are worth it.
There are much safer methods to attain a full and thick beard.
Dealing With Beard Envy
There are many men out there who have some amazing beards. Instagram is flooded with them, I see men in my day to day job who have amazing beards, and it’s hard not to feel envious.
Now you may be in awe and thinking they have the perfect beards; I’ll let you in on a secret, they also look at other bearded men in awe, finding imperfections in their own beards.
We are all the same, so we just need to love what we have, get inspiration from others, but never reset what our own genes gave us, our beard is as unique as we are.
You may be surprised to find that there are men who admire your beard.
Dealing With An Itchy Beard
When you start growing a beard you will be introduced to the beard itch, and it may be hard to believe, but it will come to an end. It takes one to two months, and it will pass.
Now if you want to reduce this time, you can introduce beard oil, and at any time during your beards life it gets a bit dry or itchy then beard oil will fix it.
Beard oil will condition your hair, and as a result, it will be healthier, strong, softer, and your skin will be happy.
Long story short, if your beard is itchy, use beard oil.
Electric Shaver Vs. Razor Blade
When it comes to trimming your neckline, there is debate over using an electric shaver or a razor blade. Personally, I say use whatever you feel most comfortable using.
There are differences in how the hair is cut between the two. A razor will give a sharp edge to the hair where the electric shaver will give a torn more natural cut to the tip of the hair.
So an electric shaver may result in less irritation.
Though, just use what you want to use.
How To Get Rid Of Beard Dandruff
You can get beard dandruff through a few ways.
Firstly it can happen due to dry skin caused by excess water in your beard after a shower. The evaporation of that water on your skin actually results in dry skin which then turns into dandruff.
This can be corrected by drying your beard thoroughly, perhaps using a hairdryer.
Then treating your beard with beard oil.
Secondly, there is a microorganism called Malassezia globosa which feeds on your natural sebum oils produced by your skin.
The Malassezia globosa breaks down those oils into oleic acid, and some people are just very sensitive to that acid. This sensitivity results in a high rate of production of skin cells and those skin cells become dandress. Which then becomes flakes in your beard.
All you can do is keep your beard clean, use a boar bristle beard brush and apply beard oil and you’ll notice a change for the positive in a week or so.
So You Have Split Ends
Split ends are the result of your hair being too coarse or brittle. The ends then fray and split.
There are many reasons that this can happen, but the root cause is usually because the follicles are just too dry, they need more moisture.
The most typical cause is that the beard is lacking in sebum oil and this entirely natural, your follicles can only produce so much and as your beard gets longer you follicles just hit their peak and can’t keep up, so they need a little help.
That help is beard oil, if you really want to ensure that your beard oil is like your sebum oil, look for ones containing jojoba oil.
By adding beard oil, you’ll keep your beard hair soft and split ends will be a thing of the past.
Losing Beard Hairs
I want to put you at ease, losing beard hairs is completely normal. We lose hair from head to toe every single day; it’s just apart of your hairs lifecycle.
My beard comb and brush pull out old hairs daily, just make sure to keep your diet healthy, get plenty of sleep, and keep your beard oiled, and it will grow thick, full and strong.
